Yangon - Myanmar

We visited Yangon mainly to visit Shwedagon Pagoda, the largest and most beautiful Buddhist pagoda in Yangon. Yangon (formerly known as Rangoon) is the largest city in Myanmar (formerly Burma) and is also the capital. Travel websites frequently mention Yangon's colonial architecture as a major reason to visit, and while Yangon certainly had its charms--mainly the friendly people and delicious food--I'm not sure the architecture is anything to write home about.

We spent a decent amount of time walking around, and it was incredibly humid and seemed to be decaying before our eyes! Shwedagon Pagoda was amazing. We went close to sunset so we could see the temple all lit up at night. Each day of the week has it's own section of the temple. Visitors are supposed to go to the section on the day of the week they were born according to the Burmese zodiac, say a prayer to the Buddha there, and pour water over him. We didn't take part, but we were both born on a Monday, which means our Burmese sign is the tiger. That's good, because all of you born on a Thursday are rats. :)

We took a night bus to Bagan. Pictures soon!
