Rangiroa, French Polynesia & Cruising the South Pacific

After visiting our friends in Hawaii, we flew south to Tahiti to board a cruise that would end our final three weeks of our year of travel. The cruise crossed the South Pacific Ocean, starting in Tahiti and ending in Valparaiso, Chile.

We were definitely on the younger end of the cruisers, and we quickly learned that we were actually only on one segment of a multi-segment cruise that went all the way around the world. We were happy to unpack after moving so much over the past year, and it felt incredibly luxurious to sleep in the same bed for more than a few nights in a row.

The first island we visited after Tahiti was Rangiroa in French Polynesia. French Polynesia is very remote, and as a result is known for having some of the clearest water and healthiest underwater ecosystems in the world. We had two incredible dives, and spent about 20 minutes of one of those dives playing with a pod of dolphins.

If you watch the video below closely, you can see that if they swim in the direction of a diver, if the diver flips over or wiggles like a dolphin, the dolphins will circle you and spin around you! Playing with the dolphins was definitely a highlight of the trip for me!
